Chongqing - Consulate General of the United States in Chengdu and Chongqing Library co-organized “Looking Back, Looking Forward: 40 Years of Diplomatic Relations” Photos Exhibition to Mark the 40th Anniversary of the Establishment of China-US Diplomatic Relations. From Nov. 22 to Dec.21, the exhibition is open to the public for free in Chongqing Library.
From then, vice-president Deng Xiaoping’s visit to the US in 1979 to the critical moments of China and the US’s cooperation in various fields, 37 precious photos are on display. These photos record the historical stories behind significant bilateral relations. Deng Xiaoping in a lunar rover (1979), President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan with Terracotta Army (1984), Master Shi Yanming, founder of American Shaolin Temple (2005) . Through those photos, visitors can appreciate the fruitful results from China-US relations.

The Photos Exhibition reviews on what our relations have gone through in the past 40 years, said Mr. Jim Mullinax, the Consul General of the United States in Chengdu. According to the Consul General, China and the US enhance the relations and understanding of each other through economy, education, and culture exchanges. He welcomes and encourages more people-to-people trade among the two countries.

The relations between Chongqing and the US are historical, said Ms. Tang, Deputy Director of Foreign Affairs Building of Chongqing Municipal People’s Government. During WWII, Chongqing was home to the US embassy as well as the US’s press general administration in China. The prominent US General Joseph W. Stilwell, who contributed significantly to Anti-Fascist War, used to work and live here. The famous Flying Tigers actively involved in fighting against Fascism.
To mark the 40th Anniversary of the Establishment of China-US Diplomatic Relations, Foreign Affairs Office of Chongqing Municipal People’s Government and Chongqing People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries have carried out a series of activities including the 40th Anniversary of the Establishment of China-US Diplomatic Relations & General Stilwell and China Forum, which brought together experts and scholars specializing in China-US relations together to retrospect the renewed China-US relations as well as look into the future.
