Chongqing - Chongqing has proactively integrated into the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), turning from “fullbacks” to “forwards” in its approach to opening up. As the year 2023 drew to a close and a new one began, we unveiled the bilingual poster “Across Land and Sea, Exchanges and Mutual Learning Among Civilizations.” These posters capture the essence of the intercultural dialogue between Chongqing and the global community, highlighting the dynamic energy and growth that result from these exchanges and mutual learning, which continue to drive Chongqing’s development forward.
From January to February 2023, the Chongqing Ballet Theater presented graceful performances, Pursuit of Shangri-La and Ripples Across Stagnant Water, with Julio Mario Santo Domingo Theater online. These performances mesmerized audiences in Colombia and the world, blending modern Chinese literature and colorful Tibetan customs in ballet form.
On February 20, 2023, the Center of Chinese and Greek Ancient Civilizations was inaugurated in Athens. Led by Southwest University in collaboration with domestic universities, such as Renmin University of China, Shandong University, Sichuan University, and Greek universities, including the University of Athens, the University of Patras, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and the University of Crete, the center fosters intellectual exchange between two of the world’s oldest civilizations, enhancing Sino-Greek relations and sharing wisdom across the Eurasian continent.
July 16, 2023, marked the launch of Chongqing Week in Singapore. The event showcased Chongqing’s rich intangible cultural heritage and featured scenic spots, highlighting the cultural and tourism synergy under the China-Singapore (Chongqing) Demonstration Initiative on Strategic Connectivity. This event was a multifaceted platform to present Chongqing’s vibrant culture and socioeconomic progress.
The First International Forum on Cave Temple Conservation, held from August 19-21,2023, in Dazu, Chongqing, Academy of Dazu Rock Carvings and the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation. Abdul Samad, Director of Pakistan’s Directorate of Archaeology and Museums, said that the similarities between Dazu Rock Carvings and the Gandhara art witness the civilizational exchanges between the two regions in the ancient Silk Road era.
On September 17, 2023, Chongqing Municipal People’s Government and Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory signed a cooperation memorandum. This agreement paves the way for supporting Chongqing Normal University and Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory to jointly establish the Chongqing Tchaikovsky Conservatory, a significant step towards nurturing world-class musical talent.
2023 is a pivotal year for the joint World Heritage application of Baiheliang Ancient Hydrological Inscription in Chongqing and the Nilometers in Egypt. These two historical hydrographic relics underscore the ingenious ways Asian and African agricultural civilizations have interacted with their riverine environments.
On October 31, 2023, Chongqing was honored by UNESCO, joining the Creative Cities Network as a Creative City of Design alongside Valencia and other cities. This recognition, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Spain and the China-Spain Year of Culture and Tourism, opens new avenues for deepening cultural exchanges and collaborations.
